Professor Vaughan Carr, is a leading expert in schizophrenia, with 30 years experience in mental health research. He is currently a Professor of Schizophrenia Epidemiology and Population Health at the University of New South Wales and CEO of the Schizophrenia Research Institute, the only national medical research institute solely dedicated to discovering the ways to prevent and cure schizophrenia.
He has held numerous NH&MRC and other research grants, and has over 140 publications in the fields of schizophrenia, substance abuse, early psychosis, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, psychiatry in general practice, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, medical education, health economics and health service evaluation. |

Professor Cyndi Shannon Weickert, graduated with a BA in Biology and Psychology, earned a PhD in Biomedical Science, trained in the neuropathology of schizophrenia, and became Chief of the MiNDS Unit at the prestigious National Institutes of Health (NiH) in Washington DC, USA.
Her research has focused on determining how normal brain development is changed in schizophrenia. She has published several landmark findings, which have shifted the attention of worldwide research onto the role of growth factors and hormones in the pathophysiology of the illness.
Prof. Shannon Weickert was appointed as the Macquarie Group Foundation Chair of Schizophrenia Research in December 2006. This is the first ever Chair of Schizophrenia Research in Australia and was initiated by the Schizophrenia Research Institute.
She is driven by her own personal experiences as her twin brother developed schizophrenia. |
