About the Institute

The Schizophrenia Research Institute is the only national medical research institute solely dedicated to discovering the ways to prevent and cure schizophrenia.

Established in 1996 as Australia's first virtual medical research Institute, the organisation conducts and supports schizophrenia research in hospitals, universities and research institutes across the country and internationally. With approximately 60 employees and 140 scientific affiliates, the Institute drives a proactive research agenda, has invested over $21 million and has had numerous successes to date. More >>

About schiziophrenia

Schizophrenia involves alterations in brain structure and function, and is characterised by a retreat from reality in the form of delusions and hallucinations, as well as emotional disturbances, subtle intellectual impairments and disorganised behaviour. It will affect 1 in 100 young people, marginally more males than females, and is the third leading cause of disability in 15-44 year olds worldwide. More >>

Patient stories

Schizophrenia has a long history of neglect, demonisation and concealment. Even today, the illness does not receive the levels of public attention and research funding warranted by the numbers of individuals and families it affects. It is also common for affected families to conceal the illness from relatives, friends and workplace associates, thereby diminishing its impact upon public awareness.
